Built in 1860 — the same year Glamorgan became the first rural municipality in Australia — Swansea Courthouse is a State heritage-listed colonial building at the heart of one of Tasmania's oldest towns. Two light-filled rooms with varnished timber floors, high ceilings, arched windows, and a wide veranda make it a distinctive and intimate venue for ceremonies and small gatherings on the East Coast.
Swansea Courthouse was constructed by James Hurst in 1860 from rubble masonry with brick detailing, some of it sourced from the earlier military outpost at Waterloo Point. It served as the seat of local government for over 150 years before being transferred to the community in 2014 and restored under Swansea Courthouse Arts.
The building comprises two rooms of approximately 59 and 58 square metres, each with varnished timber flooring, generous natural light, and ceiling heights reaching over four metres. A wide veranda with original timber-panelled doors connects both rooms to Noyes Street. The space seats 30–35 comfortably for a ceremony or intimate reception.
Swansea sits midway along the East Coast, 45 minutes from Freycinet National Park, with beaches, vineyards, and a growing food scene close at hand.
