The Top Six Regions to Tie the Knot in Tasmania
Tasmania has become a wedding wonderland for so many couples across Australia and beyond. After marrying people across the globe, I can honestly say there’s something magical about Tasmania that just can’t be replicated elsewhere. Here’s my rundown of the top six regions where couples are saying “I do” across the Apple Isle, and what makes each spot so special.
1. Hobart & Surrounds
The historic capital is a smorgasbord of wedding potential. From the sandstone charm of Battery Point to the harbour views at Salamanca, Hobart offers that perfect blend of accessibility and beauty.
What makes it special: The juxtaposition of heritage architecture against the dramatic backdrop of kunanyi/Mount Wellington creates photos that look straight out of a fairytale. Plus, when your interstate guests fly in, they’re already where they need to be. The food and wine scene is next level too – imagine treating your guests to some of Australia’s finest produce at your reception.
2. Huon Valley
I might be biased since I call this place home, but the Huon Valley is simply extraordinary. The rolling hills, apple orchards, and the mirror-like Huon River create a setting that feels both intimate and grand.
What makes it special: There’s a rustic authenticity here that you can’t manufacture. The valley has a way of making even the most elaborate wedding feel grounded and real. Plus, the light here is photographer’s gold – that soft, golden glow filtering through the trees turns every wedding photo into art. The emerging boutique accommodation options mean your guests can make a proper weekend of it too.
3. East Coast
The pristine beaches and dramatic coastline of Tasmania’s East Coast are becoming increasingly popular for couples wanting that perfect blend of relaxed and spectacular.
What makes it special: Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay provide some of the most breathtaking ceremony backdrops you’ll find anywhere in the world. There’s something powerful about exchanging vows with the sound of waves crashing in the background. The East Coast feels like a proper getaway, giving your wedding that destination feel even for Tasmanian locals.
4. Cradle Mountain & The Northwest
For couples seeking dramatic wilderness as their witness, Cradle Mountain and Tasmania’s rugged northwest deliver in spades.
What makes it special: The alpine scenery provides a truly awe-inspiring backdrop year-round. In winter, there’s the possibility of snow (imagine those photos!), while summer brings wildflowers and crystal-clear skies. There’s something humbling about declaring your love in a landscape that’s remained relatively unchanged for thousands of years. Plus, the northwest coast offers some of Tasmania’s most characterful accommodation options.
5. Launceston & The Tamar Valley
Tasmania’s second city and its surrounding wine region blend urban sophistication with pastoral beauty.
What makes it special: The Tamar Valley’s vineyards provide ready-made wedding venues with world-class wine on tap. Launceston itself offers beautiful historic venues like Entally House. There’s a warmth to the north that feels different from Hobart – perhaps it’s the slightly milder climate or the rolling vineyards, but weddings here have a particularly convivial atmosphere.
6. The Central Highlands
For the truly adventurous couple, Tasmania’s Central Highlands offer majestic landscapes and incredible solitude.
What makes it special: The landscapes here feel almost otherworldly – highland lakes reflecting perfect skies, button grass plains stretching to the horizon, and some of the clearest air you’ll ever breathe. Weddings here tend to be intimate by necessity, which often creates the most meaningful ceremonies. There’s something powerful about making your vows in a place that feels so far removed from everyday life.
Each of these regions offers something unique, but they all share that ineffable Tasmanian quality – a sense of being somewhere that matters, somewhere real. That’s why I believe Tasmania has become such a sought-after wedding destination; in a world of increasingly manufactured experiences, a Tasmanian wedding feels authentic in a way that’s becoming rare.
